The artist Alex Katz was born in 1927 in Brooklyn (New York) from Russian émigré parents. He entered the Cooper Union Art School of Manhattan in 1946 and studied painting under Morris Kantor. He learned the techniques of "en plein air" painting and his first solo show was held at the Roko Gallery in 1954.
Over the years he focused on more realistic paintings and in 1959 he produced his first painted cutout (a canvas cutout mounted on contoured wood). During his long career his art ranged from portraits of groups of people to landscapes, portraits of dancers, models and more.
His work has been shown in over 200 solo and 600 group exhibitions in some of the world's most important galleries and museums. These include the Brooklyn Museum of Art, MoMA PS1 New York, the Saatchi Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
Alex Katz, artist born during the dominance of Abstract Expressionism, is known for his pictorial works, often portraits characterised by a flat, uniform spread of colour. This would anticipate American Pop Art, although Katz cannot really be associated with this movement.
In contrast to the abstract tendencies of his years, Alex Katz, painter who is still active today, prefers a return to the figurative and to a very personal and "pop" idea of realism. The colour, uniform and luminous, is one of his distinctive features and makes his works iconic and unmistakable.
Portraits of the wife of Alex Katz Ada are among the most recurrent subjects. Works such as Grey Coat (1997) and Blue Umbrella I (1972) are perfect examples, the latter being the artist's auction record. The first portrait of Ada dates back to 1957 and they got married in 1958.
The artist's other subjects include friends and relatives portraits, as well as landscapes.
