Andy Warhol - Vesuvius #14

Vesuvius #14 is a lithograph made by American artist Andy Warhol in 1985.

One of Warhol's most iconic artworks of the 1980s, the lithograph depicts Vesuvius during an eruption. With the bright colours typical of the artist and Pop Art, this work is charged with energy and shows the volcano in all its destructive power.

In Vesuvius Warhol takes inspiration from Neapolitan Vedutism and landscape painting to create works in full Pop Art style, but in dialogue with the past and tradition. In these artworks by Andy Warhol, Vesuviusand the surrounding landscape become an expression of the destructive power of nature, another central theme in the artist's work, already addressed in 'Fate presto', the initiative of the Neapolitan art dealer Lucio Amelio for the 1980 Irpinia earthquake.

Thus, Andy Warhol designed Fate Presto, a giant picture of the front page of the newspaper Il Mattinopublished the day after the catastrophe. With Fate Presto, Andy Warhol pays homage to Italy and the victims of the tragic event, and Lucio Amelio chose the work as the manifesto for the entire project.

And with Andy Warhol's depiction of Vesuvius, volcano and destructive power are identified in an evocative representation of nature and its superiority over man.

Vesuvius #14 is a lithograph used to promote the exhibition "Vesuvius by Warhol" at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples. The artwork is hand-signed and measures 22,5x22,9 cm.

Vesuvius: Andy Warhol and the City of Naples

In 1985 Andy Warhol made 18 canvases, 17 of which are exhibited at the Capodimonte Museum in Naples, dedicated to Vesuvius.

Andy Warhol's Volcano is the result of a collaboration with gallery owner Lucio Amelio. The two had met in 1974 in New York, when Warhol made four portraits of Lucio Amelio. Andy Warhol then visited Naplesfor the first time the following year at Lucio Amelio's invitation and stayed in the city for three days.

For Warhol, Naples was the Italian version of New York.

"I love Naples because it reminds me of New York, especially the many transvestites and the rubbish in the streets. Like New York it is a city that is falling apart, and yet the people are as happy as the people in New York."
