GIOSETTA FIORONI AND THE POP DIMENSION OF THE FAIRY TALE

Giosetta Fioroni was born in Rome in 1932. The daughter of art, her father was a well-known sculptor, and her mother an accomplished painter - Fioroni approached the art world from an early age.

Admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, she began exhibiting at the Quadriennale in 1955 and the following year at the Venice Biennale. From that moment on, the artist participated in countless solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad.

During these formative years, the artist took part in the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo and thus got to know the likes of Tano Festa, Mario Schifano, Jannis Kounellis, and Mimmo Rotella.

Returning from a period in Paris between 1958 and 1962, Fioroni worked on the Argenti cycle, that is, works in which she projected photographs onto canvases by tracing the outline of her subjects-especially women-with colors made from enamels and industrial aluminum paints.

And it was during these years that Fioroni's artistic career began to take shape: in the 1960s she frequented artists such as Willem De Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly.

In 1968, she made the performance "La Spia Ottica," which inaugurated the exhibition "Il Teatro delle Mostre" at Galleria Tartaruga in Rome.

The following year, however, Fioroni Giosetta made the first Teatrino, an "adult toy" made of painted wood equipped with a lens through which it is possible to look at a set of miniature objects.

After moving to the Veneto region in the 1970s with writer and companion Goffredo Parise, she approached new artistic projects, devoting herself to the fairy-tale, magical, and fantastic dimension. The interest in the world of legends and spirits allows the artist to open her personal and collective memory to the world: from this experience, a series of works were born dedicated to fairy tales and the rediscovery of childhood.

“In all my work, there is a common matrix that is childhood, a particular childhood, lived among elements very much related to visionary. All this played an important role in making certain choices, shots, and even ways of imagining space. A space that is always so distant, as it happens on a stage."

During the 1980s, Fioroni Giosetta continued her collaboration with writers and poets, including Parise himself, indeed with Ceronetti, Abrasino, Zanzotto, and Garboli, producing works on paper, books, and graphics.

She produced the pictorial cycle Il Vero and a series of pastels and oils dedicated to Tiepolo in the same period.

In 1990 the National Institute for Graphics in Rome organized an anthological exhibition with all her works on paper since 1993. She thus continued with painting, devoting her time to the production of ceramics, creating important sculptural cycles.

In 1993 he participated in the Venice Biennale with a solo exhibition.

    THE SILVERS BY GIOSETTA FIORONI

Through the juxtaposition of signs, symbols, common objects, and writing, each of Giosetta Fioroni's artworks investigates feelings and bonds that unite people. Her works reshape personal and collective memories in Pop style in a dynamic dialogue with the artist's imagination.

Fioroni portrays a not nostalgic memory, yet full of feeling, that intends to pay homage to the past without losing the vitality characteristic of all Pop Art. The artist brings back in his subjects an energetic and vital human emotion, capable of renewing itself by reworking the past in a Pop key.

In the golden years of her production (the 1960s and 1970s), Fioroni Giosetta made so-called "Silvers," or works with materials other than the usual uses - enamels and aluminum paint. In a Pop world made of color, Fioroni finds a non-color, bringing attention back to the subject.

Also called "slides of feelings" by his companion Parise, Fioroni implements with this series of works a kind of emotional layering declined through an artistic language made of personal reminiscences and the cultural and aesthetic mutations of her era.

Moreover, the use of silver-effect enamel recalls cinematographic film, thus distancing the works from the past and approaching more avant-garde languages.
