Banksy - Pulp Fiction - Screenprint on paper - Unsigned

Banksy’s work Pulp Fiction is a screen print on paper, and it is a limited edition of 600 unsigned species. The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Pest Control.

As the great majority of his works, Banksy street artist shows for the first time the iconic scene of the movie Pulp Fiction directed by Quentin Tarantino on the wall of the London neighborhood, Old Street in 2002.

The artist right after, in 2004, created a limited edition of 750 species, 150 of which with his signature while the others, 600, unsigned.

The main characters, John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson are portrayed in one of the best-known frames. The tribute to the director Quentin Tarantino is evident. Banksy shows the protagonists Vincent and Jules on a black background with white stencil lines, right before the two are ready to shoot. Instead of the guns, however, the two take up bananas. Banksy’s works are also known for their humor, thanks to which he turns upside down the violent scene from Tarantino’s movie into a hilarious scene.

The original work, located in London, has been removed by the government body “Transport for London” since it contributed to give to the neighborhood a violent and decaying image. However, Banksy, also known for his irreverent personality, decided to create a new version of the work.

The new work of Banksy Pulp Fiction, once again located in Old Street in London, shows the same movie frame as the previous one, but this time, Vincent and Jules are dressed up with a banana costume.

The original work from 2002 gave rise to a limited edition screen print on paper in 2004. The screen print measures 50x70 cm.

Bananas in contemporary art

Banksy’s choice to let John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson using bananas instead of weapons it is not a coincidence. The fruit, according to the gallerist Emmanuel Perrotin, has two meanings: bananas are both symbols of global trade and classic humor.

The fruit has always been depicted in contemporary artworks, from the iconic representation in Andy Warhol’s work for the album The Velvet Underground & Nico, to Basquiat with his work Brown Spots (Portrait of Andy Warhol as a Banana), or even Keith Haring, who portrayed on paper Andy Warhol with a banana in his hand.

Bringing back bananas on the artistic scenario, besides Banksy’s work, are artists like Mr. Brainwash with Banana Split and the work Comedia by Maurizio Cattelan.
