Banksy – Queen Vic: Analysis and Meaning

Banksy depicts the stern Queen Victoria in the act of “queening”: the wordplay makes irony of the Queen’s intransigence on social issues by representing her in a sapphic sexual pose.

For this artwork Banksy took inspiration from the Queen’s own assertion that women “could not be gay”.

The artist refers to those anti-gay and homophobic laws that the monarch had proclaimed to support her conservative convictions.

He portrays her with scepter and a crown, but also with knee-high leather boots and a short skirt that shows suspenders. This attire highlights the gap between nobility and worldliness. Her partner also wears provocative clothes, her arms spread on the ground, thus implying complete submission.

The stencil is presented in black and white and is set against a regal red background: the intent is clearly erotic.

The essence of this image is definitely provocative. Queen Victoria has gone down in history as the figure of the strongest mental and social closure; here she becomes a symbol that needs to be overthrown.

Banksy: Street Art and Society

Banksy’s criticizes Capitalism, Politics and Greed. His subversive nature is reflected in the way he chooses to denounce these aspects of today’s society, namely with Street Art.

He starts from a classic image like that one of Queen Victoria, recognizable to all, and he distorts it, creating something that goes against the very meaning of the monarch, or rather against its moral values that crush any sense of freedom.

Twisting contrasts and meanings is the focus of Banksy’s work. Queen Victoria is the representation of a dualistic mentality of society in which we live and that doesn’t allow us to be free as we would like to be, but it imposes itself on our lives without respecting the own rules first.

Satire is one of the strongest tools that Banksy uses to convey his message and is used to denounce an autarkic and at the same time ignorant system, that “doesn’t practice what is preaching”.

Queen Vic is yet another powerful artwork in full Banksy style: the image is striking, it goes straight to the point. Unlike other works by the artists featuring slogans, no words are needed in this case.

The search of social justice always animates Banksy’s feelings. This is the reason why his canvases appear on the walls of urban streets where thousands of people pass through every day, keeping and nourishing the social movement in the city.
