Matisse. Cahiers d’art, le tournant des années 1930
Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris. From 1 March to 29 May 2023
The exhibition "Matisse. Cahiers d'art, le tournant des années 1930" brings together a group of artworks from the 1930s by the artist Henri Matisse.
After being excluded from the art scene during the 1920s, the painter's work returned to the centre of debates on the ideas and reflections of the time, through regular publications in Cahiers d'Art, an important French avant-garde magazine founded by Christian Zervos in 1926, which shed light on his painting and in particular on his most radical works.
In 1930 Matisse left France for a trip to Tahiti, thus voluntarily marking a pause in his creation and initiating a turning point in his career. The exhibition traces this decisive decade through the Cahiers d'art. A mouthpiece for international modernism and the aesthetic trends of its time, the magazine reports on the artist's production throughout the inter-war period.
Exhibitions on Matisse are numerous. Of those that have dealt with the different periods of his career, few have focused specifically on the 1930s. "Matisse. Cahiers d'art, le tournant des années 1930" focuses exclusively on this decade.
In several issues of the magazine, Matisse appears alongside artists of his time: Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Léger, Vassily Kandinsky, Mondrian, Le Corbusier and Marcel Duchamp.
Alex Katz
Guggenheim Museum, New York. 21 October 2022 to 20 February 2023
In eight decades of intense creative output, Alex Katz has tried to capture the visual experience in the present.
Eternity exists in minutes of absolute awareness. Painting, when it succeeds, seems to be a synthetic reflection of this condition - Alex Katz
Emerging as an artist in the mid-20th century, Katz forged a figurative way of painting that fused the energy of Abstract Expressionist canvases with the American vernacular of magazines, billboards and the movie screen. Throughout his practice, Katz turned to the environment of Central New York and the Maine coast as his primary subject matter, documenting an evolving community of poets, artists, critics, dancers, and filmmakers who animated the cultural avant-garde from the post-World War II era to the present.
Encompassing paintings, oil sketches, collages, drawings, prints, and freestanding "cut-out" works, the exhibition will begin with intimate sketches of New York underground passengers from the late 1940s and culminate with the immersive, rapt landscapes that have dominated his output in recent years.
Marco Lodola. Dame, Cavalieri e Nobili Destrieri
Santa Maria della Scala Museum Complex, Siena. From 9 December 2022 to 9 February 2023
Marco Lodola has decided to hold his exhibition entitled "Marco Lodola. Dame, Cavalieri e Nobili Destrieri" in Siena inside the Complesso Museale Santa Maria della Scala and in some corners of the city.
The protagonist of the exhibition is a luminous scenography composed of eighteen works placed in the spaces of the former Refectory and five large luminous sculptures in the San Pio Room. The city installations will be set in some of the most important places in the city such as Piazza del Campo, the Logge della Mercanzia and the Logge del Papa.
Ugo Nespolo Wanderer about New York
Reggia di Colorno, Colorno. From 21 January to 11 April 2023
Ugo Nespolo will be on show in Colorno where the artist's shots taken in New York will be displayed in an exhibition with forty photographs entitled "Ugo Nespolo Wanderer about New York".
The photographs exhibited will document the New York of the 1980s and 1990s and will help to understand the choice of subjects and settings of his artwork as a painter.
Ugo Nespolo used numerous means of expression to communicate, photography being only one of them, but we cannot forget his activity as a painter and cinema.
Jago-Banksy-Tvboy e altre Storie Controcorrente
Palazzo Albergati, Bologna. From 11 November 2022 to 7 May 2023
The city of Bologna is ready to welcome the most provocative, non-conformist and revolutionary exhibition of the winter of 2022/23: "Jago-Banksy-Tvboy e altre Storie Controcorrente".
The exhibition aims at investigating and proposing the stories of the three great artists Jago, Banksy and TvBoy, who have been protagonists of the art scene in recent years thanks to their irreverent and provocative works.
Through the display of 60 works, the exhibition puts Italian street art in dialogue with the art of the mysterious artist from Bristol, thus wanting to tell the story of modern-day art.
The exhibition wants to pay homage to three artists who have made their art reach the hearts of the general public, but not only! Numerous artworks by other artists such as Obey and Mr. Brainwash will be exhibited to bring the viewer even closer to a "unconventional" path of contemporary art.
