May 24th, 25th and 26th at the cinema: the new documentary about Banksy finally out! Directed by Elio España, the movie tells the story of the world's most famous street artist from his hometown Bristol to the rise as the leader of a revolutionary artistic movement.
Banksy and the Rise of Outlaw Art wants to tell for the first time the complete story of Banksy's career: from his early artworks as a young underground writer to becoming the most famous and discussed artist of the twenty-first century, despite his identity still unknown. Inspired by the New York graffiti of the 1970s, Banksy transformed the Street Art movement into the most discussed and sought-after art movement, changing the very concept of art.
Interviews and exceptional witnesses
The movie shows a rare archive from private collections and unpublished interviews. Among the speakers, the art promoter Steve Lazarides, Banksy's former right-hand man; world-renowned artist Ben Eine, one of Banksy's closest collaborators; John Nation, who managed the graffiti project from which Banksy's story began; the famous street artist Risk, Felix "Flx" Braun, KET & Scape, as well as several art experts and critics.
"I think there are many misconceptions about Banksy, and his anonymity has a lot to do with it," said the director Elio España. "People don't think of Banksy as a graffiti artist, he's not anymore, but his origins absolutely come from that world. His art is not out of context, he is the result of his background in Bristol and the culture and politics of the time - a particularly tumultuous, but also exciting, period. He was part of the graffiti world, he was a pioneer of Street Art along with several other important figures, but Banksy has completely changed the way art is exhibited and sold. I believe that by understanding his history, you will also get a much deeper understanding of his work”.
