The works in the series by Mr. Savethewall International Language stem from a reflection on language and on the English language as a universal and shared means of communication. Temporarily taking a step back from the more colourful frogmen of the Kiss Me series, this collection makes us face a clear image that leaves no room for misunderstanding.
On a black background, the works show a precise object with its transcription in English and the phonetic alphabet below. In this way the street artist makes the most of the symbolic power of the language and reflects on English as a universal means of communication, which over the years has increasingly established itself (and will continue to do so) as a shared language uniting culturally and geographically distant peoples and nations.
English as a universal vehicle
After music, English is the only language that can be considered international, with a simple grammar, but not without semantic complexity. In International Language Mr. Savethewall uses English as a universal medium to express concepts and encapsulate their meaning in a work of art.
In accordance with the research of conceptual art, in this series there are references to the fathers of this current, such as Joseph Kosuth and On Kawara, but Mr. Savethewall still remains faithful to pop references to everyday objects, in a potentially infinite linguistic, conceptual and iconographic game.
"Mr. Savethewall has always articulated his artistic experience not only on images but also on words. His works are often characterised by the juxtaposition of images and figures with phrases or exclamations, which link the visual register to the social dimension inherent in the works themselves, to analyse current habits and traditions and re-propose them in a playful or polemical, unsettling or desecrating way. In this new project for the Deodato Arte gallery, Mr. Savethewall starts from the words and letters of the English language, drying them in their purest essence and juxtaposing their meaning and significance through a visual representation in black and white". - Chiara Canali, curator

The works of International Language at Deodato Arte
International Language was presented in 2019 at the Deodato Arte gallery in the exhibition of the same name curated by Chiara Canali. Sky Arte ha dedicated a special insight to this collection.
All the works in the series are unique pieces on canvas made with a mixed technique that combines stencil, acrylic and spray paint. Each piece is hand-signed, and the stencils from which the works were made have been destroyed by the artist, making each piece 100% irreproducible.
The most iconic subjects include animals, everyday objects, brands and companies, numbers, letters and more. A potentially infinite series that can give voice (and image) to everything that surrounds us.
