Picasso. La metamorfosi della figura

Picasso. La metamorfosi della figura, Milan. Until June 30, 2024.

The exhibition titled Picasso. The Metamorphosis of the Figure will be held at the MUDEC - Museum of Cultures, from February 22 to June 30, 2024.

Pablo Picasso is renowned for his revolutionary deconstruction of figures and faces, an extraordinary change in the history of art that has irreversibly influenced everything that came after him.

However, to fully understand his approach to thought and creation, it is essential to explore his deep knowledge of primitive African, Egyptian, and Greek art. Contrary to considering these forms of art as "primitive," Picasso asserted:

"There is neither past nor future in art. If a work of art cannot always live in the present, it has no meaning."

Throughout his life, the artist explored the essence and meaning of these artistic eras, incorporating them into his works and undertaking a constant metamorphosis of figures, leading to the creation of the masterpieces we all know.

The exhibition Picasso. La metamorfosi della figura offers an in-depth look at this constant intellectual reworking and the artistic legacy of his vision. Over forty works, including paintings and sculptures, along with 26 drawings and sketches of preparatory studies, guide us through the revolution led by the Spanish artist.

Noteworthy is the work Femme nue, a prelude to the masterpiece Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, exhibited alongside African masks, creating a surprising and fascinating dialogue.

The Bano Foundation at Palazzo Zabarella in Padua hosts the exhibition Da Monet a Matisse. French Moderns 1850-1950, presenting approximately 60 works to narrate the great charm of "French Moderns" throughout a century marked by artistic revolutions. The selection of about 55 masters, mostly painters, ranges from Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet to Jean-Léon Gérôme and William Bouguereau, covering a period from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century.

All the works come from the prestigious Brooklyn Museum in New York, renowned for its extensive collection spanning Egyptian and contemporary art, and considered a pioneer among American institutions for its early interest in French Modernism.

The exhibition is part of the cultural program of the Paduan Foundation, which has followed the paths of modern art and recalled the milestones of great 20th-century collecting, fostering knowledge of significant foreign museum realities. The artistic selection embraces the romantic and realistic suggestions of Corot, Courbet, and Millet, then moves on to the Impressionist revolution of Monet, Sisley, Caillebotte, Pissarro, Renoir, and consistently reaches the 20th-century avant-garde, including fauves and cubists such as Bonnard, Vuillard, Henri Matisse, Léger, and Derain.

Symbols and Objects: Pop Art from the Guggenheim Collection

Simboli e Oggetti. Pop Art della Collezione Guggenheim, Bilbao. Until September 15, 2024.

The exhibition Simboli e Oggetti. Pop Art della Collezione Guggenheim provides an in-depth look at the Pop Art movement through over 40 key works by iconic artists, offering a rich and complex context of its evolution. Presented at the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the exhibition celebrates not only the well-known masterpieces of Pop Art pioneers but also explores their legacy and influence on contemporary artists.

In the "Symbols" section, the exhibition reveals how Pop artists challenged aesthetic conventions by incorporating elements considered vulgar into artistic creation. Prominent figures such as Roy Lichtenstein, with his distinctive use of comic book-style dots, and Andy Warhol, known for his serigraphic repetition of mass-produced images, emerged as pioneers who redefined the concept of "high art" through their innovative approaches.

The next section, "Objects," delves into the Pop Art inspiration from mass communications and the urban environment. Works by artists like Robert Rauschenberg, who integrated found objects and materials into his creations, represent the fusion of art and everyday reality. On the other hand, Jim Dine and Claes Oldenburg transformed the gestural implications of abstract painting into extravagant performances, critiquing mass consumer society through events that combined dance, visual arts, and poetry.

Additional space is dedicated to artists who contributed to the movement outside the United States and the United Kingdom, such as Sigmar Polke, Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Miguel Ángel Cárdenas. While not directly referencing Pop Art, these artists interpret its main premise, questioning aesthetic conventions and the differences between high and low culture through the lens of Nouveau Réalisme.
