From October 21 to November 29, 2024, the United Nations Headquarters in New York is hosting an extraordinary exhibition, Street Art is Female, an exhibition that celebrates female street art and promotes awareness of women's rights globally. The event, curated by Alessandra Mattanza and Augusto Ferretti, with the support of the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN, provides an international platform to reflect on the fundamental role of art in spreading values of peace, love and equality.
The exhibition brings together female street art artists from around the world, committed to supportingwomen's empowerment, promoting gender equality, and combating violence against women. The works on display testify to the importance of women's political participation, their economic empowerment, and their right to inclusive education. Each work represents a piece of the struggle for social inclusion and human rights, paying tribute to the power of art as a tool for social change.
Alongside the works of female artists, the exhibition includes two special sections: one dedicated to male street art artists who support gender equality and another that explores the new frontiers of digital and generative art, highlighting how artificial intelligence can help support urban and street art. This diversification of artistic styles and languages makes Street Art is Female a unique opportunity to reflect on how art can build bridges and break down barriers.
The invitation to the exhibition, aimed at global audiences, is an invitation to celebrate art and its transformative potential.
A work by TvBoy at the UN: Italian art in the service of peace
Italian art finds an exceptional stage at the United Nations headquarters in New York, where a work by TvBoy, the artist famous for his provocative murals with a strong social impact, was recently exhibited. The work, which reflects the vibrant and ironic language typical of his style, is a tribute to the importance of peace, social cohesion and human rights, themes that resonate deeply within the context of the UN.
TvBoy, pseudonym of Salvatore Benintende, has become internationally known for his street art characterized by subjects inspired by pop culture and current events. With his unmistakable style and impactful works, TvBoy aims to narrate the contemporary world, highlighting the conflicts and contradictions of our society. The artist, originally from Palermo and artistically raised between Milan and Barcelona, has always tried to use his art to convey strong and, often, uncomfortable messages. Exhibiting within the United Nations represents an achievement of great symbolic value for him.
TvBoy 's presence at theUN is also a celebration of the influence of Italian street art on a global scale. Italian urban art has, in fact, transcended local boundaries, coming to dialogue with a vast and international audience, and the UN headquarters is perhaps the most representative place to witness this encounter between art and social issues. This is an important step for TvBoy and for Italian contemporary art, which once again demonstrates its ability to innovate, excite and raise awareness, remaining faithful to its mission of representing the most pressing issues of our time.
Exhibiting in such a prestigious context as the United Nations is therefore a recognition for the artist and an encouragement for the Italian art world to continue promoting messages of peace, tolerance and mutual respect.
