THE ARTWORK

-

This beautiful card is derived from the 1963 painting Ethel Scull 36 Times by Andy Warhol, the first work commissioned to the artist. The work is made up of four rows of nine identical columns, depicting Ethel Redner Scull, a well-known collector of modern art, especially pop and minimal art. It was Robert Scull who asked the artist to portrait his wife in the style of Marilyn Monroe's depictions of Warhol. Warhol then took Ethel Scull to a Times Square photo booth and urged her to take 300 black-and-white photographs of herself as she told her jokes in an attempt to make her photographs more sincere. The photographs were then assembled and colored different from each other to repeat the image of Ethel.
