THE ARTWORK
The artwork by Takashi Murakami, Time Bokan, Black + Moss Green was made in 2006 and is a limited edition of 300 pieces.
The artwork recalls of the Time Bokan series, a Japanese anime. The representation of classic subjects from the world of Manga and Anime is a typical feature of the works of Takashi Murakami. At the end of each episode of the Time Bokan series, it was usual for the enemy of the episode to explode, due to the defeat, causing the appearance of a mushroom cloud with the shape of the skull inside. It is curious the addition, by the artist, of garlands composed of smiling daisies, a recurring subject in the works of the artist, inside the orbits of the skull.
The work Time Bokan, Green is an offset lithograph is numbered and signed in original by the artist.
For Takashi Murakami, Manga and Superflat are an important source of inspiration for his works. Bright colors and images of mass culture are typical elements in Murakami's works.
Takashi Murakami has managed to reconcile two distant levels of art: high art and low art. The former is the type of art intended for museums and collectors, while the latter involves the production for mass consumption. The works by Takashi Murakami, therefore, aim to break down the boundary between elite and popular art.
The work is made according to the postmodern art movement founded by the artist himself, namely the Superflat. The artist uses the term Superflat to refer to the various flattened forms found in graphic art and the "superficial emptiness" of Japanese consumer culture.

Born in Tokyo, Takashi Murakami has always been passionate about Manga, so much that he wanted to become a designer. He studied Japanese traditional painting at the University of Art in Tokyo. Takashi Murakami makes his debut in the art world with his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 1989. He then moved to New York, bringing there his Superflat style, which became a real movement of Japanese art.
This style is characterized by the integration of many elements such as Japanese culture, 70's anime and Japanese paintings, all merged into flattened images, smooth surfaces and bright colours. Murakami’s works of art become true monumental icons of Japanese society, making the artist one of the best representatives of contemporary Japan’s cultural originality.
Murakami has often been described as a pop artist and compared to Andy Warhol for being openly inspired by mass culture. In his works, in fact, references to the iconography of anime and manga are evident.
The artist produces his works in a factory, Kaikai Kiki, which is very reminiscent of The Factory of the king of pop art. The process of realization is based on techniques of reproduction in series through digital models, on which he draws sketches with the pencil, which are later inserted in a computer by experienced assistants of vector graphics.
Without denying his interest in the activities of Warhol and Jeff Koons, the artist has claimed his cultural autonomy, and stated that his aesthetic references are essentially related to Japanese pop culture and the otaku phenomenon.
Takashi Murakami is compared to Andy Warhol because, just like the Pop Art star, he combines consumerism and art by taking images from mass culture and turning them into original works of art.
His creations are part of an artistic movement called Superflat, meaning the lack of perspective depth in his works. The subjects represented by Murakami are hybrids of characters from a fantasy world that draw on traditional Japanese art forms combined with Anime and Manga, at the same time rejecting the illusion of perspective and depth.
The art of Takashi Murakami is conceived in a completely computerised way, drawings and sketches made on a pocket notebook, scanned, photoshopped, repainted on canvas and repainted with acrylic paint. A process that manages to combine traditional drawing with new digital tools.
The art of Murakami criticises modern consumerist society and raises awareness of the media's manipulation of society.
Among the main subjects of the works by Takashi Murakami, it is possible to find the colorful Flower Ball series, characterized by a unique explosion of colors and small smiling flowers.
Through smiling flowers, which have become his symbol, Murakami defines with his artworks the true essence of superflat style, merging various elements from the traditional Japanese culture, the world of Manga and Anime with bright colors, linking aesthetically to both Japanese Pop Art and the otaku phenomenon.
